Create a usable parenting proposal
School schedules, transportation, holidays, decision-making, and everyday routines deserve specific attention. Bring the current order and a clear account of what is working and what is not. Identify safety concerns promptly and distinguish your observations from information supplied by others.
Changing custody requires the correct standard
A custody change generally requires a material change in circumstances affecting the child’s welfare since the prior custody award, followed by a determination of the child’s best interests. Visitation-only requests have different rules. A move, new job, or disagreement does not automatically require a different custody award.
Keep support issues distinct
A support modification uses a separate statutory standard. If you need both parenting and financial issues addressed, raise both at the consultation. An existing support or parenting order should be brought to the discussion, along with later modifications.
Bring a concise parenting timeline
- Current orders and new filings or hearing notices.
- School and childcare schedules and relevant expense information.
- Your proposed arrangements and a timeline of the changes you want reviewed.
